Review of Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for the Young at Heart

Chicken Soup for the Soul: Inspiration for the Young at Heart: 101 Stories of Inspiration, Humor, and Wisdom about Life at a Certain Age
by Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Amy Newmark

This book was a pleasant surprise. I was expecting more bible passages and religious theory. This book is filled with humorous, uplifting stories that encourage the older generation that while retirement may mean the end of life as they know it, this doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Retirement can also mark a new beginning. An era where the kids are grown, and exploration of the things one always wanted to do but never had the time is possible.
A lot of the stories though, pertain to those who have the nest egg saved up to travel or spare no expense in their endeavors. While some do give ideas and examples of more localized ways to spread one’s wings, I got the impression that seniors who need to be more frugal in their retirement, may find this book more apt to inspire yearning, rather than hope. All in all it is very entertaining and had me chuckling out loud several times.
